The co-founder of Hyperallergic, Hrag Vartanian, visited UC Davis last month to talk with graduate and undergraduate students about his perspectives on the art world. It was a great talk and very enlightening regarding the kinds of non-traditional ways artists are finding support and building communities. He seems very hopeful that the dominance of "straight white males who make objects for rooms" is being challenged, or at least circumvented in favor of more open and fluid structures of support within the art world.
I was very fortunate to have a studio visit with him during his trip to Davis, and was very happy with his immediate and thoughtful understanding of my performance/video work. His particular interest as an arts writer/critic is performance art, but it was this blue "relic" in my studio that caught his attention the most. Thanks for the generous and considered feedback Hrag, and hopefully we'll see you in New York in March when we stop by the Hyperallergic office during our NY field trip.
